Existing structures often hold more potential than is apparent at first glance. One example of this is the courtyard of the Richtiarkade. Since its completion, the courtyard has remained largely unchanged. Extensive gravel areas and sparse landscaping characterized this public outdoor space. Its potential as a place for people to gather and interact had not yet been fully realized. That is why we undertook a targeted redevelopment of the courtyard, enhancing both its ecological and social qualities in line with the needs of the tenants.
More Diverse Greenery for People and Nature
The redesign combines ecological and social qualities. The existing Japanese maples were preserved as much as possible and supplemented with site-appropriate perennial plants. The more diverse planting creates additional habitats and food sources for insects and birds.
The surface design was also adapted: The permeable gravel areas were renewed and supplemented with large-format natural stone stepping stones that define the walkway.
At the same time, an attractive gathering space was created: New flexible seating, shade-providing elements, and sturdy tables offer additional opportunities for relaxation, socializing, and short breaks in daily life.
Learning from Existing Developments
The Richtiarkade is part of our “Vibrant Outdoor Spaces” program. Through this program, we are testing different approaches to further develop outdoor spaces in existing developments in an environmentally and socially responsible manner. The insights gained from the individual projects are continuously incorporated into the program’s further development and future initiatives.
